Driving the Hana Highway

The Hana Highway goes all the way around Mt. Haleakala and follows the shoreline of East Maui. It's a gorgeous ride on a scenic and very curvy and narrow road. Nominal destination of the road is the small town of Hana, even though touristically it's the Oheo Gulch (part of Mt. Haleakala National Park) which is the main destination. Past the Oheo Gulch the road turns to gravel and becomes a real challenge for everyone without a SUV. On the east side of the island lush rainforests and waterfalls abound, yet once one passes beyond the Gulch, the scenery becomes dry - even desertlike.
